A 'full scale riot' has broken out in Liverpool outside a hotel after social media users reported a police van being set on fire.

The incident was reportedly sparked by a demonstration outside the Suites Hotel, in the northeast of the city.

Reports have come in that say that a 400-strong demonstration made up of 'fascists' was met with several counterdemonstrators.

Riot police are understood to be on the scene breaking up the demonstrations.

The protest is believed to have been started by locals in the area railing against the perceived influx of migrants to the UK.

Protestors were filmed chanting "get them out" as they set fire to police vans.

Knowsley's MP, Sir George Howart, said in a statement shared on Twitter: "[The] protest tonight do not represent this community. We are not like that and overwhelmingly behave with sympathy and kindness to others regardless of where they come from".

"The people of Knowsley are not bigots and are welcoming to people escaping from some of the most dangerous places in the world in search of a place of safety", he added.
