A Canadian flight attendant was allegedly beaten unconscious while on vacation in Mexico in a horrifying attack that left her needing nine hours of surgery to reconstruct her face.

Lexie York, 29, says she was brutally attacked inside her Tulum hotel room on November 10 by a male guest she had met earlier that night.

Police have charged Ricardo Sanchez Pichardo, who lives in Mexico City, with attempted murder over the attack that left York with multiple facial fractures and lacerations to her face and neck.

York, who lives in Ontario, had checked into Grand Bahia Principe resort and was waiting for her mother to arrive the following day for their joint holiday.

She said she had met Pichardo and his wife, as well as another couple, in the hotel restaurant earlier that day in what she described as a friendly encounter.

York claims she had gone back to her hotel room at night when Pichardo allegedly knocked on her door and said his wife had heard screaming.

In an interview from her hospital bed, York told CTV that he forced his way into her room.

‘That’s when he started strangling me,’ she said. ‘I was on the floor and could barely see.’

York claims Pichardo had his hands around her throat and repeatedly struck her in the head.

She said lost consciousnesses when she was trying to fight him off.

York said she woke up beside the bed but had lost some vision in her eyes. She claims Pichardo was still in the room and that he had appeared to have passed out.

She was rushed to hospital after escaping the room to seek help.

She had to undergo about nine hours of surgery to reconstruct her face following the attack.

York suffered multiple facial fractures, a fractured orbital bone and several lacerations to the face and neck in the attack.

Doctors had to wait 48 hours before they could perform any surgery due to the amount of swelling to York’s face, according to a GoFundMe page set up by her family.

York now has plates in her cheek and mesh around an eye in a bid to fix the muscles.

Despite traveling for work as a flight attendant, York said she will no longer travel alone following the horror attack.
