Polling by Ipsos Mori and Axios shows Republicans are divided between seeing themselves as supporters of Mr Trump or traditional Republicans. Fifty six percent consider themselves traditional Republicans while 36 percent identify as Trump Republicans.

But two-thirds of Republicans, and just over a quarter of Americans, support his decision to contest the US election results.

Figures from the poll, conducted between Tuesday and Thursday, show 64 percent of Republicans said they support Mr Trump’s recent behaviour.

It also showed 57 percent of Republicans believe he should be the 2024 Republican party candidate, with 17 percent thinking he should be removed from office.

The 45th US President is facing mounting pressure after becoming the first in history to be impeached twice on Wednesday.

He is charged with “incitement of insurrection” by the US House of Representatives.

A total of 10 Republicans voted against Mr Trump, leading to a final result of 232 votes to impeach and 197 against.

It follows a riot by a mob of his supporters at the US Capitol on January 6. Five people were killed as a result of the violence, including a police officer.

Mr Trump, who will be replaced by Joe Biden on January 20, has accused big tech companies of dividing the country following bans from Twitter and Facebook.

He is now facing a permanent ban from Snapchat while Facebook has said he is suspended “indefinitely”.

Mr Trump has asked his supporters not to cause any further violence in a five-minute video message posted on the White House’s YouTube account.

He said: “Mob violence goes against everything I believe in and everything our movement stands for. No true supporter of mine could ever endorse political violence.”

Separate polling by NBC news found 50 percent of voters around the US believe he should be impeached and removed from office. Forty eight percent are opposed.

Their poll found just eight percent of Republican voters think Trump should be impeached and removed from office, compared to 89 percent of Democratic voters.
