Heavy, scattered rain and thunderstorms are in the metro area forecast Thursday and Friday and the stormy weather could be severe at times in widespread locations.
“There could be some very localized issues with the widespread storms,” said Bruno Rodriguez, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Boulder.
There’s a limited threat of flooding in wildfire burn scar areas, as stronger storms may produce 1/3 of an inch of rain in 15-minute downpours, the weather service said.
Urban flooding is possible, but the upcoming weather will likely not be as impactful as last week’s steady and long periods of rain, Rodriguez said. Six inches of rain over three day’s last week caused flooding in some parts of the metro area along with road damage.
“It’s not going to be huge overall,” Rodriguez said of the stormy weather arriving Thursday. “It’s going to be widespread and some stronger local storms could occur.”
Hail as part of the upcoming system could be around one-inch diameter, he said.
The weather will start earlier for Eastern Plains residents, with scattered showers and thunderstorms expected to develop Wednesday afternoon. Widespread precipitation remains in the forecast into the weekend, .
Wednesday late-day storms will likely develop brief but heavy rain, winds to 60 mph and hail to some areas of the Eastern Plains, according to the National Weather Service forecast.
In Denver there’s a 20% chance for showers and thunderstorms Wednesday afternoon. Skies will be partly sunny and the high temperature will near 79 degrees. Wednesday night, skies will be partly cloudy and Denver has a 30% chance for precipitation, mainly before 9 p.m., according to the weather service. The overnight low in the city will be around 52 degrees.
Overnight Thursday in the city the chance for precipitation is 80% and the low temperature will dip to about 52 degrees. On Friday night, the change for precipitation drops to 20% under mostly cloudy skies with a low near 49 degrees.
The chance for afternoon rain in Denver remains in the forecast Saturday at 40%, according to the weather. It will be partly sunny with a high near 74 degrees. There’s a chance for afternoon showers and thunderstorms on Sunday, skies will be mostly sunny, the high temp will be around 76 degrees.
