‘Camel’ grandad dodged mirrors as lump ‘with veins’ grew to size of cricket ball

A grandad felt 'like a camel' after living with a massive five-inch lump growth on the back of his neck.

For eight years, loving husband and family man Alan from Burton-upon-Trent, Staffordshire, felt a small abscess swell to the size of a cricket ball.

In Tuesday night's (June 21) brand-new episode, The Bad Skin Clinic, Alan jokes: “Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who's got the biggest lump of all?”

But looking in the mirror, he admits how much his unwanted lump took a toll on his self-esteem.

In the show which first aired on Quest Red at 10pm and is now available to stream on discovery+, Alan says: “It’s a lipoma, a fatty lump. It’s very rare I look at this lump in the mirror, I don’t like the look of it.

"It’s terrible, loads of horrible veins in it. I look like a camel. It just wants getting rid of.”

Speaking to leading Dermatological Surgeon Dr Emma Craythorne at her clinic in central London, Alan revealed: “It stops me going out with the grandkids.

"It’d be nice to take them places without people staring at you. If it can be sorted that would be a massive weight off my shoulders!”

After removing his shirt, Dr Emma dons her surgical gloves and takes a closer look at the growth. “OK, jeepers! That’s a decent one you've grown! It’s a bit squidgy.

"It’s just dying to be removed this, isn’t it? Look at the veins that are growing on it! No wonder it’s causing you problems.”

Fast forward to operation day and Dr Emma’s colleague, Consultant Plastic Surgeon Alastair Mackenzie Ross, begins the complicated procedure.

With steady hands, he uses his surgical scalpel knife to cut an incision across the diameter of the lump.

Once the incision has been made, he starts to ease the lipoma out from behind Alan’s open flesh, tucking his fingers inside the skin to loosen it and slowly pull it out.

Alastair exclaims: “There’s our lipoma! This is promising because I'm able to get my finger in there and sweep around quite easily, so I should be able to remove this without too much difficulty. It should come out in one piece.”

After some further coaxing, Alastair is able to sit the lipoma outside of Alan’s skin, in order to start slowly severing it from the back of Alan’s neck.

“It’s big! I’m worried I’m going to drop it!” the surgeon says.

On coming round after the surgery is complete and discovering his lump is gone, an overjoyed Alan revealed: “When I woke up, I tried to feel where it was, and there was nothing there! Fantastic!”
