Nicola Sturgeon was torn apart after Ruth Davidson MSP who held up three separate reports which insisted Scotland needed to make urgent improvements to its pandemic planning. The reports included notes on PPE stock and advice given to social care accommodation and care homes. Speaking in Scottish Parliament, Ms Davidson said: “The First Minister talks about the guidance issues to care homes, the report states ‘flu pandemic guidance published in 2012 designed for health and social care in England was issued to health and social care in Scotland’.

“Despite the fact that her government had been told that they had to update that guidance in 2018, it wasn’t open to consultation till 2019 and even six months before Covid hit, they still hadn’t published.

“Two years of failure in telling social care accommodation and care homes what they should be doing and how they should be doing it.

“Throughout this pandemic, the First Minister has sought to build a reputation on how she has handled this virus but the truth is her government was less prepared than it should have been and it’s set out in black and white in today’s audit Scotland report.

“Mistakes were made by this government. This report has made it plain that this government was warned again and again and again.

“There were years where this first minister could have acted, what stopped her?”

Ms Sturgeon replied: “I don’t think it bears any real or serious scrutiny.

“I’ve sought to do nothing over the past 10 months, almost a year now, other than every single day do my best and make sure the government was doing its best to steer this country through this pandemic.

“That is still my focus each and every single day.”
