Keir Starmer has admitted that rejoining the EU would not boost economic growth for the UK. The Labour leader said there is “no case” for returning to the EU or the single market. When asked by BBC Radio 4 whether membership of the single market would “boost economic growth”, Sir Keir responded: “No at this stage I don’t think it would and there’s no case for going back to the EU or going back into the single market.”

He was later questioned on whether he could change his mind on the issue, to which he responded: “No, I don’t think. We left and having left there is no case now for saying ‘go back’ and back into the single market and customs union”.

The comments come on the same day as the Labour leader launches the Commission on the UK’s Future Report, alongside former Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

It will look to address constitutional reform, including devolution of power in the UK.

Speaking this morning, Sir Keir called for the abolition of the House of Lords, saying that “anybody who looks at the House of Lords would struggle to say it should be kept”.

He described it as “indefensible”, adding: “We want to abolish the House of Lords and replace it with an elected chamber that has really strong missions, so, for example, looks after devolution and actually makes sure our politics works.

“So yes, we do need to abolish the House of Lords”.
