Grant Shapps says there’s ’12,000 mutations of Covid-19’
The Transport Secretary was quizzed on why the UK Government does not place a greater emphasis on testing arrivals from abroad once they land in Britain. The Transport Secretary stated that quarantine is the primary weapon the Government using against imported Covid cases and added that he did not know how many different mutations of the virus are in the UK.
Mr Shapps said: “First of all when you do a test on somebody who is asymptomatic you are not all that likely to find out whether they are carrying the virus on day one as they arrive.
“Therefore it is not a particularly useful thing to be doing which is why we have relied on quarantine.
“Quarantine has been our primary weapon against it.
“I cannot say for certain which mutations are here, not least because there are 12,000 different mutations of coronavirus.

“Mutations themselves are not that unusual.”
